Despite being rather old, I just recently got this awesome game.
SEGA indeed created a little gem here, combining RPG elements in a rather complex strategy game which tells the tale of how a little country in Europa gets sandwiched in the middle of a war between two superpowers. The setting is very similar to that of WWII... if it not were for the addition of the supernatural element, in the form of the Valkyria myth (I dunno, they seemed like female Super Saiyans to me lol).
Anyways, I was very satisfied with this late purchase, although the mechanics are a little messed up, as the Order system makes even the most difficult maps a breeze. However, unlike many other strategy games where the most conventional thing to do is to eliminate all the enemies, Valkyria Chronicles actually punishes you for doing so, as the best rewards of the game are obtained if you achieve the objective (which most of the time consists in capturing the enemy base) in the minimum amount of turns possible (I'm certain that at least 90% of the maps can be completed in 1 turn). This means that instead of acting tactically, most of the times you'll end up doing suicide runs with Alicia lol.
Surprisingly, the game has no trophies, although there are 20 medals you can achieve if you manage to unlock every profile, weapon and score an A in every map and skirmish battle in all the three difficulties, meaning that you'll end up investing quite some hours if you want to obtain said decorations.
Finally, all I can say is that it is a shame that SEGA had to fuck things up and kill this franchise by releasing the following TWO games in the fucking PSP. Seriously, wtf they were thinking?
